Moving to Kenya in 2005 I discovered some wonderfully talented artisans and small businesses with no marketing outlet in UK. Here was a perfect opportunity for me to assure a small number of individuals & community groups of a regular income. I started up A Small Shop in Africa (ASSiA) selling unique homewares at Charity Fairs throughout UK and further developed an on-line market place. My business has grown over the years discovering new ranges whilst keeping old favorites.
Having travelled and lived in over 5 different countries in 4 continents during my life I have a discerning eye for new and exotic textures, colours and style. ASSiA brings together the very best from a few of East Africa’s finest artisans. Offering a unique selection of ethically sourced Hand Painted Trays, Matchbox Covers, Hand Engraved Recycled Bottle Glassware, Ankole Cow Horn and a huge choice of Bright Kenyan Baskets sourced from Rural Community Women’s Groups. All our products are hand made in small workshops and I work directly with the artisans, helping with both design and sales. This year we are introducing a wide range of Glasses, Jugs & Carafes from Kitengela Hot Glass “A passionate and practical ensemble of scrap glass renewed and re-fashioned.” Splendidly stylish & sustainable.
